Linux on Sparcstation 1+

Hi,

I have tried to install Linux on two seperate Sparcstation 1+ systems (I
used the redhat 4.2 distribution).
For some very odd reason, the IO of the disks was so bad that the system
was completely unusable. When I did mkfs on the disks (I tried two
seperate disks) it slowed down "exponentially" which is very
strange. It went very fast in the beginning and started slowing down. It
ended up taking a few hours. Linux booted and all but was pretty unusable.
bdflush was taking a lot of CPU time and there was just a terrible IO
problem.
Solaris 2.5 runs on this machine without any of these problems. Disk IO is
normal.

Any idea what the problem could be? Should I try installing on a
Sparcstation 1 instead of 1+ ?
Any insight would be appreciated because we really want to use Sparc
Linux.

Thanks,
Andi
