Unless I'm misunderstanding you, this describes the semantics of a
journaling filesystem. There was a group working on this, I believe, but
I do not have the mailing list address handy.

At work we use JFS on IBM RS/6k boxes and Advfs on Digital Unix. AFAIK,
they are highly tolerant of the abuse you describe.
