Last I checked "as a common rule" implied there were exceptions, and
that those exceptions were fairly common. I just wanted to clarify
your post, as it at least to me implied that "yeah, it probably won't
do anything bad to ya." Turning off a DOS system at random is an
example on something that is "safe as a general rule" -- DOS will
*usually* not trash your disk, but once in a while it will.
Anyway...
