the userland hack-level equivalence: pttyd!

this daemon runs as root. users connect to its socket and give it the pid
and the name of the ttyp slave to be reowned. it then checks /proc, makes
sure that the said pid has the master pty opened...and if it does, it
chown's it to teh appropriate uid....
