I've had this happen to me too, the situation was:

. Install a Debian GNU/Linux distribution from CD-ROM, set it up to boot
from floppy, root on /dev/hdb (and modules there too).
. cd /usr/src/linux; make menuconfig; make zfloppy
. make modules; make modules_install
. reboot using the new floppy

-> errors at boot time, some modules wouldn't load claiming symbol
mismatches.
