About DOS and primary partitions, I can't remember when I started doing
this, but I *think* it was back in the times of DOS 6.
DOS's fdisk can't create more than one primary DOS partition, but it
handled them just fine if I created them using Linux's fdisk. At the very
least, Windows 95 handles them nicely (and I as far as I recall, it can't
create them either, just use them).
I happily escaped ever having to use extended partitions...
