sound broken?

Is sound broken in 2.1.61? It certainly is for me.

When I play mp3s or wavs, it progresses at decode time (which is fast :) but
without generating any sound, eg, just like redirecting to /dev/null.

When doing a "cat file.au > /dev/audio" or "dd if=/dev/audio of=sample.au
...", I get a "cat: write error: Invalid argument"

Quake plays sound just fine (!).

I have a SB 32, non PnP, with sound compiled as a module.
