On the VGER sparc snapshot I hit the problem code in
/usr/src/linux-2.1.61/arch/sparc/kernel/unaligned.c

It happens on a Sparc Classic (sun4m).

Unsupported unaligned load/store trap for kernel at <f006a210>.
Kernel panic: Wheee. Kernel does fpu/atomic unaligned load/store.
Press L1-A to return to the boot prom

It happened in 2.1.5x (x>6 or so) as well.

It is not really reproducable but happens typically when I do 'updatedb'
on a freshly booted system (my stress test).

I am not sure but I don't believe the system wrote out the error message
when, in the past, I did not enable verbose SCSI reporting. The system
simply used to hang without any output.

I hope this is useful info and if I can help debugging I would be happy
to do so.
