Hardware monitoring support?

Is anybody presently working on hardware monitoring support in Linux
2.1.x? Perhaps in the form of something in the /proc filesystem? Or
perhaps it already exists? Is the DMI spec freely available to assist
development?

I think this is a tremendously handy feature for servers running Linux.
