Compiling a driver statically into the kernel is not always an option.
Maybe you're short on memory, or you want to fiddle with some compile-
time options or debug the driver without rebooting once in a minute.

Furthermore, I think the floppy disk driver allocates its DMA buffers
only when the device is opened.

PS: I did have problems with both the floppy disk driver and the SCSI
tape driver. The latter was when I tried to restore a backup after
repartitioning my drives. The advice that the driver should have been
compilied in is not very helpful in such a situation.
