ide disk spin down & won't restart

Hi,

I have just installed redhat 5.0 (kernel 2.0.31) on my Gateway2000 Solo laptop.
I did a complete reinstall (reformat the disk) as I wanted to repartition.

I find that if the hard disk spins down the kernel won't bring it up again.
The disk will spin down either because it hasn't been used for some time or when I close
the laptop lid (in which case pressing the restart button takes it out of 'sleep' mode).

I had previously been running rehat 2.1 on the laptop without any problems at all
(kernel 1.13 I think).

I have configured APM into the kernel, this didn't help.

What happens is that I get messages of the form:
hda: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy }
hda: drive not ready for command
ide0: reset timed-out, status=0xff

Config info (out of /var/adm/messages) is:
Dec 7 22:54:06 dill kernel: hda: IBM-DCRA-22160, 2016MB w/96kB Cache, CHS=1023/64/63
Dec 7 22:54:06 dill kernel: ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14

Any ideas ?

I am prepared to hack the device driver if given a few pointers ....

Thanks in advance.
