Bootable Kernel Problem

I know this is a tad off topic for the kernel development list but I've
managed no useful answers elsewhere (HOWTO's, help screens, man pages,
linux-admin list, etc) and I suspect the answer can be found within
this group. Please respond off-line to minimize chaff.

I'm trying to build a kernel and dd it to a floppy such that it will
function in a manner similar (exact?) to the Slackware distribution (ie:
put the kernel floppy in, boot, it asks for the root floppy after the
kernel is loaded and a gzipped root file system is read off the floppy
into RAM disk). I suspect this requires some manipulation with rdev
beyond what I've figured out so far. If anyone could help me with this
(once again, off-line to minimize the chaff I've already created with this
post), I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.
