Ncurses/kernel upgrade

I recently had a small crash, and ended up installing linux 3.3. To get
back to my dev. kernel I had to reinstall many packages. When I got to the
kernel source, I tried a make menuconfig, which complained there was no
ncurses installed. So I installed ncurses with both --prefix=/usr and
--prefix=/lib and still get the same make error. Ncurses tests out fine
with the test programs. I seem to be missing ncurses.h somewhere. How can I
fix this? Please email replies. Thanks!
