I have

alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-1 off # Predictor-1, not yet supported

in /etc/modules.conf, and do not get that message with pppd 2.3.3.
Instead, I get "modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-10" messages, but
PPP works for me too.
