I'd like this thread to die soon, but wanted to comment on this:
Solaris partitions just may reside inside of the partition. The rule is that
first 512B of the disk is the partition table and so that you don't waste
space between partition table and first partition, some partition can start
at 0. ufs, Solaris swap, etc. all start at 8KB+, leaving the first 8K
untouched (so does recent ext2, but leaves just 1K). So I don't think there
is any reason why to differentiate between Sun "stripes" and partitions (in
fact, SparcLinux and UltraLinux usually use them as partitions as well).
