That sort of thing used to happen to me frequently when I used PPP 2.2.0.
I reported it several times, but nobody ever had a suggestion. I haven't
had the problem since changing to PPP 2.3. It's available from
ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/.
