lockup with 2.1.81 -- ide problem?

I just had a system lockup while copying a source tree over the network using
smbfs. The system printed the following messages (copied by hand):

wait_on_irq, CPU 14
irq: 2 [2 0]
bh: 0 [0 0]

then a list of addresses decoding to

c01749eb ide_intr
c010bb75 handle_IRQ_event
c010bc9c do_8259A_IRQ

alt-scrolllock gave addresses decoding to __global_cli.

I've never seen a problem like this before, and the system has been rock-solid
previously. Ominously enough, the system crashed again a couple of minutes
later, and e2fsck required several runs to fix the disk. Anyone have any ideas
of what happened here?
