As several people pointed out, there is a problem with NIS in stock
RH5.0 (glibc2.0, actually) that could explain the tar extraction
slowness. So it looks like I might have been hunting two independent
problems (net slowness & tar slowness). I customarily disable NIS
lookups on all my Linux boxes but since the NetServer was meant to run
Linux only for some brief testing periods (don't blame me for that!
;-), I didn't do that for the NetServer. Consequently, tar would run
just fine on all Linux boxes _except_ the NetServer. Duh.

This is great news, actually. The net slowness should be easy to fix
now that I'm reasonably confident that nothing strange is going on in
the box.
