Good morning to everyone following this thread. Hopefully I can put

I have been around Linux for a long time, probably as long as anyone.
Those people who know me would, I hope, have to concede that my
intent has never been to nitpick developers. I would stand with
everyone in saying that Hannu's contributions to the kernel have been
significant and have given important functionality to the kernel.

All of us in the technology business are probably horrendously
over-worked. I have been pulling 20 hour days for so long that even
my dog doesn't know who I am. I apologize if this caused any of my
replies to seem intemperate.

I do feel compelled to explain where some of my comments originated
from. I have a team that is aggresively working on digitalized sound
projects. We had a raft of machines come equipped with Ensoniq
AudioPCI cards which I was prepared to buy OSS drivers for. The
$20.00 that Hanuu charges for these are probably the best bargain in
the business.

I pulled down the first set of beta drivers in November. To the
credit of the OSS team everything installed and ran from the get go.
Very slick installation. The only flaw was that I couldn't get the
/dev/dsp port to record sound which was rather a show-stopper in our
books.

I contacted the OSS team in California and was told that this was
fixed in the current beta. I downloaded it but the problem still
existed. I contacted OSS again and was told to file an e-mail bug
report which I did. I didn't receive a reply from the bug report so I
just kept on downloading betas to see if the problem would resolve
itself.

As of 3.8.1l and 0300 this morning the /dev/dsp port still emits
nothing but 0x80's and 0x7f's which corresonds to a hiss when played
backed. I have user the enclosed mixer to set the recording input to
mic. I have turned up the input level on the mic. I have used the
configuration utility to turn OFF the security feature which prevents
recording from the soundcard but I don't seem to be making much
progress. The same card and microphone record just fine under W95 and
I can play back the recordings just fine with OSS.

Hannu was kind enough to send me a note saying that the AudioPCI
drivers are not under NDA and I can get the spec from Ensoniq's web
page. I suspect that we will be junking the cards and getting
something that the kernel has native support for. I am not afraid to
debug problems but unfortunately with binary modules this is not an
option.

Our problems may very well be secondary to operator error. It
wouldn't be the first time that I have spent weeks debugging something
that should have been obvious. If anyone sees the error in my ways I
would be most appreciative of a brick against the side of my head.

I again apologize if I inadvertantly defamed individuals who have
contributed to the overall good of the movement. If Hannu is tuned
in and there is a possibility that this is not operator error I would
be more than happy to do whatever remote debugging would be helpful.

A pleasant remainder of the week to everyone.
