2.1.85, 2.1.86 problems

2.1.84 was rock solid, but 85 and 86 have had hard lockups for me on
my dual-P166MMX (Gigabyte MB) system. I finally managed to provoke it
while X wasn't running, and it looks like IDE is crashing and burning,
causing the kernel to panic. These messages repeat over and over
again, eventually leading to a panic in ext2; these messages then
continue for a while, repeating and pushing the panic messages off the
screen (of course).

ide0: reset: success
hda: recal_intr: status=0xd0 { Busy }
ide0: reset: success
hda: recal_intr: status=0xd0 { Busy }
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:03, sector XXXXXXX
hda: write_intr: status=0xd0 { Busy }

This is a relatively new hard drive, and never gives any trouble under
2.0.33 or 2.1.84, UP or SMP.

I may try to set up syslogd to log to my spare 486 machine later this
week to capture the earlier errors, if anyone thinks it would be
helpful.

I don't see anything in the 2.1.85 patch related specifically to IDE
except the changes to timer numbers (include/linux/timer.h), could
that have such an effect? (I notice the note about certain values
being hard-coded in asm got snipped...)

More info available on request...
