EXT2 floppy problem in 2.1.8x

I posted here earlier about a problem with ext2 and floppy in 2.1.8x.
Two other people have the same problem, so it isn't my hardware.

I have been trying to track this down. I put in some printk's in
fs/ext2/super.c to dump the superblock and the problem WENT AWAY.

To my mind this points to some random memory corruption somewhere.
But I can't find this particular needle in the haystack.
