in the discussion around that subject I haven't heard one argument yet:
You won't need the new bios until you reboot!
So after doing "dd if=newbios of=/dev/bios bs=128k count=1" you still
can check the new image inside the bios, and you still can reburn it or burn
the old bios image, which you hopefully saved.
So: Keep it simple.
Root ( or some invader who has become root) can still destroy anything...
