Yeah, as I wrote in another message, I am not interested in a new
syntax at this time because there is still plenty of work implementing
lots of new code for the old syntax.

No it shouldn't -- defconfig does not initialize dormant suboptions
(such as the four dozen sound driver options when CONFIG_SOUND=n).
