I worked somewhere that frequently had file sizes between 1GB and 10GB.
Usually those files could stay on the alpha's OSF but occasionally we
needed to get those files onto a non-alpha machine. Solaris X86 couldn't
handle it and neither could linux, so we were forced to use NT. There
was a lot of corporate resistance to linux which would have melted
if we could have shown that linux could step in and fill that need
without a 10k license.

We did have a development team but they were busy writing software for
the business; hacking solaris or linux filesystems would have been
a tough cost to justify!
