I hate to contradict you, the sound god, but I ran Quake, and qwcl happily
for quite a long time with my soundcard in 8bit mode. Excerpt
from readme.squake;
"-sndbits <8 or 16> "
"Set sound bit sample size. Default is 16 if supported. "
