No joke, the system had over 350Mb cached, it was definately not touching
disk while accessing this directory. If it were touching disk I bet
interactive performance would have been better.

Bill's suggestion that this may be caused by overly long buffer chains
is definitely something to be considered. Would you be willing to turn
on the kernel profiling code so we can see where all of the kernel time
is being spent? If it is in the buffer management code, it would be
critical to get this fixed before we release 2.2; otherwise, the FreeBSD
folks will never let us hear the end of it....
