I could probably go through the kernel tree and find three
quarters of the code there that I don't use, will never use, and
could say "I demand that this code, and these SCSI drivers be
removed from the kernel and made available as a separate kernel
add-on for those that have SCSI cards, or those that have SB
CDROMS, etc...". Every single person that runs linux will have
similar statements, and if we removed everything that someone
adamantly opposed to being in the kernel, we'd end up with no
operating system at all, but instead every single .c file would
be in a separate tarball 'optional download'.
Anything that is created as part of the kernel, that has the
possibility of being used by a large majority of people, should
be made as a built in kernel compile time option, so that those
that can benefit from it will, and those that don't want it, opt
out of it.

But you are not the only linux user in existance either. There
are a great many people that DO use kerneld, and that do use X as
well. Their computing uses are just as important to them as your
computing uses are to you. Their environment probably doesn't
suit you, and yours probably doesn't suit them. That is why we
COMPROMISE - to allow everyone to DECIDE their OWN OPTIONS, and
have it THEIR OWN WAY. That way everyone is happy.
