Getting the NULLs is probably not a kernel problem.

should be able to use ide-scsi as a module.

I bet the reason is that it did not get enough testing to get into
an official stable kernel. It is included in the 2.1.xx kernels.
BTW. Which version of cdda2wav are you using?
Try to use the alpha version from Joerg Schilling's ftp site, or
cdparanoia (sorry, I do not have the URL's handy).
