/proc/sys/net/core/net_alias_max is the documented sysctl interface to adjust
this. 'echo "512" > /proc/sys/net/core/net_alias_max' worked fine
for me. (2.0.33) Perhaps you do not have the ip_alias module installed?
Compiled into the kernel???
