I would agree with this except for one thing ... the halt-on-idle should
be set if a 6x86 is detected should be the default behavior. The reson
for this is that I have seen initial Linux installations fail because the
CPU overheated before it could be completed and the rc.cyrix installed
and run. This seems to happen most in the summer time ;)

If the default is halt-on-idle, the installation would be trouble-free and
it could always be turned off with a kernel recompile as is also required
to change this behavior with Intel CPU's. In other words, it simply puts
the 6x86 in the same state as an Intel chip and will result in less
frustration for systems with a weak fan or dirty heatsink.

As for the other enhancements, I agree, they should be left up to a user
program.

Just my personal opinion.
