I had a similar problem... the solution was to specify exactly what
port and io to use. I use this in /etc/conf.modules:
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7
The reason was a bug in the parport code. I received a small patch
which fixed it, but I'm not sure it has made it into the main tree yet.
