It doesn't happen for me (compiling sound as a module).
If you applied lots of patches (i.e. took the system from 1.2.18 to 2.1.90
by applying patches), maybe one of them wasn't clean, try getting a
.tar.bz2/tar.gz file of 2.1.89.
