Yeah, I should have been more specific:

[maynard@marquez maynard]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.7.2.3/specs
gcc version 2.7.2.3
[maynard@marquez maynard]

I have a dual ppro-180, Tyan 1662D, 128MB RAM, S3 968 video,
NCR 83C8XX PCI SCSI board, and the Mad16 Opti 82C928 sound card (By
the way, has anyone noticed this chipset generate sound distortions
during heavy load? When running Quake and QII, I get regular, loud,
scratch like noises in clockwork about twice every second or so.?.?.
I do not notice this in Windows). The machine compiles 2.0.x kernels
just fine, and my other Dual P-120 box is having the same problem. My
system didn't crash, as in an OS failure; the _compilation_ fails
because of errors. For example, look at this output my system just
generated with 2.1.89, using the _exact_ same sound config options as
you:

# make dep; make clean; make bzImage; make modules [...]

[...]

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.1.89/include -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -D__SMP__ -pipe

sb_audio.o sb_audio.c

If I choose no sound support this problem doesn't happen. I
also get this same result on my other dual P-120 (DFI), box I wonder
if this may be SMP related, but don't know how to track that down.
I'm running Redhat 5.0 on the dual ppro, and Redhat 4.2 on the dual
p-120. Still, I'm no kernel hacker, so I'm grasping at straws in thin
air here.

TIA for any suggestions!
