I had the same problem; I've backed down to 2.1.89 for now.
2.1.90-pre? (2?) also gave me full brain-dead lockups, adding to
my reasons for backing down.
BTW, to recover from the screen saver freeze, just switch to another
virtual terminal and kill your xlock process.
My system: Abit IT-5H, K6-200, 64M EDO, two IDE HDs, one IDE CD-ROM,
AHA-1522 just for tape drive, PAS-16 sound, vanilla S3 video.
