EXT2FS Corruption with QD6580 and 2.1.90

After running various 2.1.x kernels on my PII test machine I
installed 2.1.90 on my 486 server and after letting it compile
overnight tried to boot it. It came up once but after rebooting it
again I get the following error:

EXT2-fs error (device 03:01): ext2_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for
group 96 not in group (block 265)!
EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted !

e2fsck just loops saying:

relocating group 96's block bitmap to 265...
" " " inode " " 266...
" " " " table to 340...
restarting e2fsck from the beginning..

It's got 8megs, terminal support had been removed, and the bios won't
boot of the harddrive so I'm booting with LILO off of a floppy.

Any help appreciated...
