Well, something else happens on my machine. X actually paint (modulo
colors) on other virtual console than they should. Syncronization
between X and kernel is lost. On tty1 I can see my windows (with
messed colors and shifted, otherwise ok), but kernel apparently writes
there. So if I type characters, pixels change.

If you look and X / console switch design, it is mess.

You are probably right with your diagnostics when machine freezes -
I've seen those, also.
