Note that another way of fixing this problem tends to be to actually turn
the mat over - is is common in mouse mats that only the top side is
actually PnP-aware at all, and that the bottom side of the mat is just
normal plastic. Most mouse mats actually also tend to look better when
turned upside down.
However, turning the mat often reveals an unrelated problem, which is that
the mat hasn't been washed for the last six months, and has accrued a
mayer of sticky material on the side that hasn't been regularly cleaned by
the small rodent continually having cleaned up the mat. Sometimes such
mouse mats should just be discarded, but often they can be saved even at a
very late stage in cruddiness by just putting them in the dishwasher for
half an hour.
Finally - some mouse mats of shoddy quality will not be smooth enough on
the underside. A quick turn with a sandpaper will sometimes help, but when
all else fails it is usually a good idea to attend a computer-related
conference, which will be certain to have lots of homeless mouse mats
searching for a new and appreciative home. You can't avoid seeing them, as
they'll be at about 50% of all the conference stands.
