2.1.[89]x swapping to death

Before 2.1.7x, the kernels just hung after serveral hours of uptime. At
some version, and up to 2.1.91, they started behaving in a different
way: after a day or so uptime, when I start some memory-consuming
application (netscape), everything freezes, and there is constant disk
activity. By "freezes" I mean that even the mouse pointer does not move
an inch within half an hour, but the disk is constantly working. With
SysRq, I can reboot. What is interesting, is that once at the moment of
freezup, a process was running at real-time priority and locked in real
memory (mpg123). It stopped making sound exactly when the mouse pointer
stopped moving and never got alive again. I could not get any SysRq
printouts because every time this happend what I was in X.
This behavior was the same on 486 with 16Mb and on dual Pentium w/32Mb.
The kernels where always compiled with SMP.
Another problem that I noticed with 2.1 is that I am getting dead inews
processes in the process table, probably one process of a hundred or so
never finishes. This does not happen on 2.0.
