Following links and doing a search, I found this little gem:

We get this:

1. assume you have Linux and Windows
2. you upgrade Windows
3. Linux stops working because the Windows installer wrote something
to the CMOS config that disables BIOS support for PnP hardware.

Ouch. It looks like we will need the PnP support for more than
just ease-of-use.
