As the packager of the modutils-2.1.85 rpm (I'm assuming you got it from
redhat's pub/contrib), I can assure you that the dependency is not bogus.
See /etc/rc.d/init.d/kerneld
Granted, for a kmod system this is irrelevant, but a 2.1.x modutils
package needs to include kerneld to be complete.
