One situation where one has to use modules is with pnp cards which have to
be initialised by isapnp before they can be used. A kernel driver
accesses the card before it is initialised and barfs.

Also kmod in 2.1.9x is broken, you need to use kmod.c.v5 from
http://athena.res.cmu.edu/kmod/
