Thanks, I do have my printcap configured to lp0, and that is my printer.
But, I tried your test (date>/dev/lp0) and got output to my printer, one
character per page!!
Now,
cd /home/garst/debug
date > date
lpr date
lpq > lpq

lpq says 'waiting for lp to become ready (offline?)
and reports the existance of the 29 byte file date on the spool.
