pppd problem with 2.1.95

I've just booted up 2.1.96 (had to remove an extraneous character in
kmod.c:116 though), but I had two hard locks with 2.1.95 each time
trying to run pppd after I had killed it and waited a few minutes,
then ran it again. The last kernel message was (each time the same
message, from ppp.c:3313):
Apr 14 21:40:39 ztransform kernel: PPP: device busy, remove delayed
