other 2.1.96 problems

PPP refuses to load. It says the module doesn't exist or the kernel
doesn't have support for it. This is not correct. I have also done
depmod -a to create the dependencies. I can load the ppp by hand or let
kmod do it and it will always say the above. The only thing weird about
this kernel (other than the PARA IDE device can't be told no (only yes
works, someone claims module works, didn't try) is that sound still
gives me problems and the NEW below startup message. I have no clue how
to decode it, I have sent it to the below stated address as well.
2.1.96 does seem nice other than these three problems. Because of
difficulty though, I have totally erased all traces (Save the original
tar balls) of 2.1.96 .94 .92 and .92 off of my system. I will give it a
try again in 2.1.97 or, if the maintainers supply a patch they want
tested to remedy the situation (bug in my system or in the kernel or
whatever) I will try it out beforehand. Keep up the good work. And
please, someone tell me how the make menuconfig works. Several options
default to on, though changeable, are slightly annoying, given the
chance, I would make a patch and send it in. (Some of these may be
Linus and gangs default settings, understandable, if so, no problem,
I retract the offer... but there are some options like the paraport
IDE stuff that just wont go off!!)
