2.1.96 Freeze#2

Alrighty -- I just reported a short while ago that 2.1.96 had frozen up on
one machine with SMP compiled but not on a 2nd machine without SMP. Well,
2nd machine has frozen exactly the same way -- Can ping it, ALT-SYSRQ works,
can't login. SYSRQ was apparently unable to re-mount disks as read-only
because re-boot still did an fsck on them. I went back to 2.1.95 on
machine#1 (that worked OK for about 4 days) and I'm back to 2.1.89 on
machine#2 (it has RAID and that's the last kernel that has been stable for
it).
