2.1.96-97 won't compile

Starting with 2.1.96 I get the following error when trying to complile the
kernel on a RedHat 5.0 system:

kmod.c: In function `kmod_init':
kmod.c:116: parse error before character 0240
make[2]: *** [kmod.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/kernel'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/kernel'
make: *** [linuxsubdirs] Error 2

I've gotten new source code, tried different kernel options, etc. and it
won't work. I get the same error with 2.1.97. However, 2.1.95 works like a
charm.

Any ideas?
