idle task cannot sleep?

Hello. I recently had a wedged system that displayed this message on
the console:

idle task cannot sleep.

What typically causes this? My system is an IDE system with a token
ring adapter, kernel 2.0.32. Samba is the only application running on
it. It had been up for about a month since the last reboot.
