For everybody who wrote me that my machine is fine (yes, I knew that)
but Red Hat managed to bugger that one too - big thanks! I have too
many messages to acknowledge them individually. It looks like that
I am the last Linux user without this piece of information. :-)
I plead more expertise on Alpha platform.

Nasty thing about the affair is that there are no corrected compiler
binaries in erratas - even is such binaries apparently exist.
