You can swap to a file without using loop..

Loop is very useful..

Think:
mount ./test.cdrom.iso /mnt/cdrom -oloop
or
mount ./floppy.test.image /mnt/floppy -tminix -oloop
or even
mount ./quake2.cdimage.to.fool.quake2.iso /mnt/cdrom -oloop
