specify kernel boot params without boot loader ?

I want to create a diskless workstation based on RARP and NFS root.
Thus I have to specify boot params with the nfs server and root directory.
I would put the kernel image on a floppy. But I would like to avoid using
lilo for specifying the boot params. Is there a way to set boot params
(maybe even during compile time ?), so that I can just cat zImage >/dev/fd0
and don't have to mess with lilo or somesuch ?
What's the next easiest way after using lilo for this ? (assuming that I
want to boot off the floppy, not a NetBoot -- I don't have network cards
with bootprom)
